West Bengal is home to some of the finest national parks in the country. There are 15 wildlife sanctuaries, 5 national parks and 3 tiger reserves in the state of West Bengal. The distinct climate and topography of West Bengal helps in keeping the variety of flora and fauna thriving.

The capital of West Bengal is Kolkata. The state is popular for thrilling experiences for wildlife, as it is flourished with number of sanctuaries and parks. As the state is closest to the Bay of Bengal, the sanctuaries and parks are spanned with perennial place and an ideal location for most of the species of wildlife to flourish. The place is truly a paradise for both the lovers of natural beauty and wildlife.The most famous beyond questions is the Sunderbans National park. Earned recognition for the Royal Bengal Tigers, it also is the largest Mangrove forest in the world.

Sunderbans means the beautiful forests and derives its name from the words Sundari and ban, which means “the forests of sundari” or mangrove trees. Sunderbans is mainly covered by mangrove forests and vast saline mud flats and covers an area over 2500 square km in the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta and spread across to Bangladesh. The Sunderbans was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. The Sunderbans are the largest estuarine forests in the world. Piyali, 70 kms from Calcutta via Dosarhat is the gateway to the Sunderbans. The Sunderbans are accessible only by waterways.

The fauna of the Gorumara National Park includes Indian Bison, Indian Elephant, Leopard, Pythons, Turtles, four species of deer, monkeys and more than 200 birds species. The Gorumara National Park provides tourist excellent facilities to take an overview for the entire park. One can see diversity of birds by visiting Chukchukia Watchtower, as the paradise is located on the borders of the park; there are many migratory birds who often visit seasonally. One of the major attractions for the Gorumara National Park is the Asiatic one horned rhino is observed over here. The small forests of the park are popular for natural population and thus in 1949, it was declared as “Wildlife Sanctuary”.
