Air :- Ranchi,
situated around 140 km away, is the nearest airport with regular air
connections to Delhi, Calcutta,
Patna and Lucknow.
Rail :- The nearest important
railway station is Daltonganj (25 km away), connected to many places in the
region with regular trains. Ranchi and Gaya are also convenient railway stations for the tourists
coming from Delhi and Calcutta respectively.
Road :- Betla is well connected to
Daltonganj (25 kms) via Khudia morh (6km), Ranchi
(140 kms), Hazaribagh (190 kms), Netarhat (211 kms), Patna
(384 kms), Calcutta
(575 kms) etc by regular buses run by the state transport corporation and
private companies.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Betla is
between October and April. But the wildlife sightings are highest in the hot
season May and June. Although the park is open throughout the year, it would be
best to avoid the rainy season.The most comfortable time to visit in terms of
climate is between November and March.
Situated in Daltonganj District,
The Betla National Park is also known as Palamau Sanctuary. This National park
sways over an area of (979sqkm). Betla
National Park offers a
fascinating study of wild life in natural surroundings studded with forests,
hills and valleys. The Betla
National Park, first
established as a sanctuary and later upgraded to its present status, has carved
a niche for itself within short span of it's life.
Betla national park is nestled in
the lap of Deccan Plateau which includes 1,026 sq km of Palamau Tiger Reserve
in the state of Jharkhand. An additional 226 sq km was added to the park in
1989 and 63 sq km of the Mahuadar wolf sanctuary was added to national park. Situated
in the Chota Nagpur Plateau of the Palamu district of Jharkhand, Betla National Park
is one of best Wildlife travel destination in India. Betla National Park Provides
natural habitat and shelter to 27 Tigers, more than 60 Leopards, 210 Wild
Elephants & 250 Bisons, along with Sloth Bear, Panther, Wild Bear, Wolf,
Jackal, Hyena etc. and often referred as the Glittering crown of wildlife
tourism in Jharkhand & Bihar.
Eight tribes populated among the
200 odd small villages situated inside the park are adding charm to this
wildlife safari with their traditional folk culture and life style. For the
adventure lovers Tree house accommodation option is there. These fully
furnished tree houses are inside the Betla National Park, surely this is quite
thrilling experience to bent down to see the wild animals at a water hole just
few yards away. Betla National park is divided by Koel River
and its streams at several parts. The stream flowing parts are covered by
grasslands. Geography of Betla National park also offers hot springs and waterfalls adding up to the
unique natural beauty of the area.
Forests here are of Dry as well as
Moist Deciduous types with bamboo brakes. Besides diverse herbs, shrubs and
grasses, the important tree species are Sal, Asan, Sidha, Semal, Karam,
Chilbil, Kusum, Bherhul, Dhaura, Khair, Salai etc. The sanctuary is rich in
flora and fauna with 47 species of mammals, 174 species of birds, 970 species
of flora including 25 species of climbers, 46 species of shrubs in addition to
herbs, grasses etc.
Accommodation facilities have been
made available at Betla. Three star hotels as well as simple log huts, tree
houses and tourist lodges are available. one can opt for B.S.T.D.C’s Ban Vihar
or the Forest Department’s Rest Houses, besides other tourist lodges, cottages
and dormitories. The unique tree houses overlook a waterhole, ensuring a unique
experience to all those who are willing to spend a few nights in a basic setup.
