Prime Minister Narendra Modi on described certification for eight Indian beaches as a wonderful feat, and said it showcases the importance India attaches to protecting such spots and furthering sustainable development.
In Asia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Japan and South Korea have managed to obtain Blue Flag certification for some beaches. But these countries were able to achieve the Blue Flag certification in a time frame of 5 to 6 years. India has now entered the group of 50 "Blue Flag Certification Countries".
What is a Blue Flag Declared Beach
A Blue Flag beach is an eco-tourism model for providing clean and hygienic bathing water, facilities, safe and healthy environment to tourists or a beach. Blue Flag certification, Coast environmental education and information, Onshore bathing water quality, Environment Management and Conservation, and Safety Services on Beaches is a globally recognized eco-label recognized by the "Foundation for Environment Education, Denmark" based on 33 stringent criteria under four such key heads.

A Blue Flag beach is an eco-tourism model endeavouring to provide the tourists or beachgoers clean and hygienic bathing water, facilities, safe and healthy environment. The Blue Flag certification is a globally recognised eco-label accorded by "Foundation for Environment Education, Denmark" based on 33 stringent criteria under four major heads -- environmental education and information, bathing water quality, environment management and conservation, and safety and services at the beaches.
Eight beaches in India have been awarded the coveted Blue Flag certification. Radhanagar Beach in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Golden Beach at Puri in Odisha, Rushikonda in Andhra Pradesh, Kappad in Kerala, Ghoghala in Diu, Shivrajpur in Gujarat and Kasarkode and Padubidri beaches in Karnataka are the new Blue Flag beaches of India.

Asia's first beach to get Blue Flag in India
It is a matter of great joy and pride for India that on this year's World Environment Day, Chandrabhaga beach adjacent to Konark in Odisha has been declared Blue Flag certified, which is the first such beach in Asia. This certification is done after the beaches meet certain stringent environmental and quality parameters.
These are eight Blue Flag certified desi beaches:-
- Padubirdi Beach Karnataka
- Russian Konda Beach Andhra Pradesh
- Ghoghla Coast Daman and Diu
- Kasaragod Beach Karnataka
- Golden Beach Odisha
- Shivrajpur beach in Gujarat: Shivrajpur is just 15 minutes north of the Rukmani temple. The long, pristine beach stretches near the shivrajpur village,between a lighthouse and a rocky shoreline.
- Kapal Beach Kerala: Kappad Beach has historically played an important role in the history of Kerala. On these shores, over 500 years ago in 1498, 170 men led by Vasco- da-Gama first stepped onto Kerala. "A visit to Kozhikode is incomplete without a visit to this legendary site. The spice route flourished through this Beach," says Kerala Tourism official website.
- Radhanagar Beach Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Radhanagar Beach is one of the most famous attractions in Havelock Island. Commonly known as Beach No. 7, Radhanagar has been given the title of the best beach in Asia and the 7th best beach in the world by Time Magazine in 2004. The beach is also included in the Top 25 beaches in Asia by Tripadvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Awards in 2016.
