Tourism is main industry
India's smallest state Goa is located on the western coast of the country, but in terms of contribution to the country’s GDP, it is the highest. Panaji is the state capital. This beautiful state is located in Western India in the Konkan area. Tourism is Goa's main industry. Beaches apart, rice fields and coconut plantations dominate the landscape. The international airport, Dabolim, is 29 km from Panaji.
Centre of Portuguese Cultural Heritage
Goa is part of a larger cultural region known as Konkan. Northern Goa is more populated and urban, while the south is more forested. Ponda stands out for its Hindu temples built between 15th and 18th centuries. Influenced by over 450 years of Portuguese rule and Latin culture. Margao town is another centre of Portuguese cultural heritage. Goa is also a huge hit among the tourists because of the festive spirit of the place.
An International Tourist Destination
Goa presents a somewhat different representation of the country to foreign visitors. its beautiful beaches, silvery sands, ancient buildings with wonderful architecture, many old temples and churches etc. Goa is also recognized as a biodiversity site because of the exotic collection and flora and fauna that one can find here, nestled within the Western Ghats. In the Catholic world Goa is important as the place where St Francis Xavier is buried (in the Basilica de Bom Jesus at Old Goa). Apart from Christmas and New Year celebrations, the 3-day long Goa Carnival (February, Panaji) and the Feast of St Francis (3 Dec, Old Goa) are famous attractions.
Internationally Famous for Beach Holidays
From north to south, the Goa coastline is marked by a number of beach towns, with relaxed ambience, seafood and water sports such as wind surfing, water skiing, sailing, water-scooters, and dolphin spotting cruises. During the evenings, a ferry ride on the Mondovi River will introduce the tourists to the festive and cultural life of Goa through songs and great sea food. Live entertainment on the beach, at shacks and on docked ships are perennial features. Music and merriment are a part and parcel of everyday existence. The beaches of Calangute and Baga are the most visited while other famous beaches include Arambol, Anjuna, Candolim, Colva and Palolem.
